Calle Armenia, Between Niceto Vega and Carbrera
Sonria, Esto es un Stencil = Smile, this is a stencil. At first I just thought this was a clever play on those signs in stores that said "Smile, your on camera", or "Smile, your being taped" or other some such nonsense that I could only imagine an overweight white dude with a goatee saying. This is actually way more witty then I first thought, if you interpret it as a statement about the data layer implicit in surveillance culture, private spaces, etc.
"Hmm, that's very interesting Adam, I wouldn't have thought about it that way. Frankly I just thought it was a cool stencil."
"To be honest, me too, but once I looked at it again it got me to thinkin."
"Does it come down to what the artist intended? Or our own interpretation? Which matters?"
"Touché. I suppose as long as it makes you think, your experience with the text is the only thing with any real value."
"That's deep, man. Let's go get some ice cream."
"Right on. Can I borrow your lighter?"
